I am here is a series of craft based workshops, that will be undertaken as part of the Radical Spiritualism conference, that responds to the history of the Japanese town of Suwa and considers the role of feminism and spiritualism in social and political change. You are invited to join the workshops to stitch a piece of fabric and have conversation around craft, feminism and women’s voices.

The project is inspired by Suwa-based Japanese artist Yutaka Matsuzawa’s iconic Banner of Vanishing (1966), a giant pink banner bearing this text in black ink: Human, Let’s Vanish, Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Gatei, Gatei, Anti-Civilization Committee. Matsuzawa’s practice was developed as a Japanese conceptualism with Buddhist characteristics focussed on the absence of matter and form, and over time has been contextualised and appreciated within the broader conceptual art  movements in the global 1960s. 


This workshop was planned as a part of Kate's residency in Suwa. However, due to the Covid-19, we must do this online. 


I am here picks up on the aesthetics and ideas of this key Matsuzawa work – via the collective creation of another large pink banner with black text. However, I am here picks up a new thread; it addresses the absence and ‘vanishing’ of women’s voices and ideas of art movements and society, and redresses this using craft and a feminist, collective lens. 

This pink banner will be pieced together in multiple fragments. Each square or piece will be individually stitched by one participant with the text ‘I am here’ in any stitching style and any language. The idea to stitch the text is informed by Kate Just’s ongoing practice of using stitching as a feminist and poetic tool and Yoshiko Shimada’s interest in the 'Sen-nin bari (one thousand knots) a practice in Japan in which women – praying for the safety of their conscripted husbands, sons, and brothers - made good-luck sashes, each with a thousand French knots. 

 
I am here is a phrase which asserts the presence of the women who stitch it. It refocuses the stitcher away from a wish or prayer for others, and toward a meditation on her own value and importance. In this pink banner, female voices, bodily presence (through stitching) and language will rise to the surface. The repetition of the text in different languages and stitching styles will allow ideas of both individuality and collective community to emerge and coexist.

This banner’s completion in fragments also acknowledges a global reality, in which the pandemic renders us separate and isolated from so many of the people in our life. Each script and small piece of fabric bearing the text ‘I am here’ locates a person, and a voice, and a moment in space and time. As we gather in online workshops, we create a piece for this larger artwork. In doing so, we will gather together and generate a community of people, connected by craft and the importance of feminist ideas.




The workshops will be conducted online (see the time below).

Please have a piece of pink fabric (app. 20x20 cm) and sticking materials.

We will chat while we work on the stitches. The language will be mainly English and Japanese. Yoshiko and Rebecca will help translation.

ワークショップ：I am here/私はここにいる

「I am here (私はここにいる)」は、ラジカル・スピリチュアリズム会議の一環として行われるクラフトベースのワークショップで、諏訪の歴史や社会的・政治的変化に呼応するフェミニズムとスピリチュアリズムの役割を考えます。ワークショップに参加して一枚の布を縫い、クラフト、フェミニズム、女性の声についておしゃべりしてみませんか？

このプロジェクトは、諏訪を拠点とする日本人アーティスト、松澤宥の代表作「消滅の幟」（1966年）に触発されています。この巨大なピンク幟には、墨で次のように書かれています。「人類よ消滅しよう、ギャティ、ギャティ、反文明委員会」。松澤は、物質文明の限界に焦点を当てた、仏教的な特徴を持つ日本の概念芸術の始祖として知られています。来年は生誕１００年にあたります。元々のこのプロジェクトは諏訪でのレジデンシーとして企画されていましたが、コロナ禍により、オンラインでの実施を余儀なくされました。

「I am here（私はここにいる）」は、この松澤作品の美学とアイデアを継承し、黒い文字の入った大きなピンクのバナーを共同で制作します。しかし、ここには新しい意味があります。それは、芸術運動や社会における女性の声やアイデアの「不在」と「消失」を取り上げ、クラフトとフェミニストの集団的な協働でこの問題を解決を図ることです。

このピンクのバナーは、複数の断片から成ります。それぞれの布片に、参加者の一人一人が「I am here（私はここにいる）」というテキストを自由なステッチスタイルで、自由な言語で縫い付けます。このテキストを縫うというアイデアは、ケイト・ジャストのフェミニスト的・詩的なツールとしてのステッチの使用という継続的な実践と、嶋田美子の「千人針」への関心に基づいています。千人針とは、徴兵された夫や息子や兄弟の安全を祈って道ゆく女性たちに千の赤い結び目を縫ってもらい、彼らに送った腹帯のことです。 

 
しかし、「I am here (私はここにいる）」は、縫う女性の自らの存在を主張する言葉です。縫う人は、他人への願いや祈りから自分自身の価値や重要性に目を向けます。このピンクのバナーには、女性の声、（ステッチによる）身体的な存在感、そして言葉が浮かび上がってきます。異なる言語とステッチスタイルでテキストが繰り返されることで、個人性と集団的なコミュニティの両方のアイデアが生まれ、共存することになります。

このバナーが断片的に完成するのは、パンデミックによって私たちが多くの人々と離れ離れになり、孤立してしまうという世界的な現実を認識しているからです。「I am here （私はここにいる）」というテキストが書かれた小さな布の一枚一枚が、空間と時間の中で一人の人間、一人の声、一人の瞬間の存在の証となります。オンラインワークショップに参加して、この大きな作品のための一片を作ることで、工芸品やフェミニストの思想の重要性によって結ばれた人々が集まり、コミュニティが生まれるのです。

ピンク色の布（約20×20cm）とスティッチのための材料をご用意ください。

ステッチをしながらおしゃべりをします。言語は主に英語と日本語になります。嶋田とレベッカが通訳をします。
